Use the Tools on NICCS to Get Started in Cybersecurity

Familiarize yourself with the NICE Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity, commonly referred to as the NICE Framework, which serves as the common lexicon for describing cybersecurity work. The NICE Framework enables you to investigate cybersecurity career options by helping you learn about the tasks, knowledge, and skills (TKS) needed for specific cybersecurity Work Roles. This is a great place to start your research, because understanding the NICE Framework will help you navigate the other tools and resources on NICCS more effectively.

Use the Cyber Career Pathways Tool to gain a better understanding of the NICE Framework Work Roles and their common TKS relationships. The tool can help you understand what types of work might be available to you at the beginner, intermediate, and expert levels of cybersecurity based on the education, skills, and experience you have today. It also shows you how to move from one Work Role to another by identifying your skills gaps and areas of improvement in order to advance in your career. Additionally, it includes training that you can take to gain knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your career of interest. Check out the spotlight videos and micro-challenges within the Work Role details for more information as well.

After identifying which Work Roles you are interested in pursuing, you can then explore the courses in the NICCS Education & Training Catalog to help you gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Search courses by NICE Framework Work Role Categories, Competency Areas, or Work Roles as well as location and proficiency level to find courses that are right for you. With thousands of cyber-related courses across the country and online, the Education & Training Catalog has something for everyone!
